RIST Forum Members Driving RIST Adoption at IBC 2022

If you are part of the media, entertainment and technology industries, then chances are, you were at the long-awaited IBC show in Amsterdam earlier this month. This years’ show didn’t disappoint and proved to be a great opportunity to network, discuss industry trends and find out about the latest industry and technological developments.

For the RIST Forum, it was a chance to catch up with members, raise awareness of and promote RIST, as well as demonstrating its use cases. Having had little opportunity to meet members in person over the past few years, the RIST Forum held a much-enjoyed drinks reception on the Sunday evening. The reception gave members, old and new, the chance to network and discuss RIST protocols and interoperability in general.

Unsurprisingly, there was continued focus at the show on moving to the cloud, and IP transformation in general. Providing the right protocol is chosen, there are many benefits to using IP to transport media content, such as cost savings, interoperability, and flexibility. As media organisations increasingly move their operations to the cloud, and seek transport methods that provide these benefits, it is not surprising that transporting video content over IP is increasing in popularity. Deployments of RIST are increasing in-line with this, and the RIST Forum now totals 217 members.

RIST is available in commercial products throughout the media distribution lifecycle, enabling live video to be encoded, processed, and distributed over IP. There was a good number of the RIST Forum members exhibiting at IBC and demonstrating or showcasing their RIST enabled products, which was fantastic to see.

KitPlus TV conducted a great video interview on the RIST Forum. The video started with Suzana Brady, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Cobalt Digital, and RIST Forum Chairperson giving some background about how and when the RIST protocol and Forum came to be, along with key developments that have taken place over the 5 years since it has been in existence. In the KITPlus video, Suzana explains that RIST provides an open, interoperable and technically robust solution for low-latency live video over unmanaged networks. The RIST protocol has been designed to enable multi-vendor interoperability, while ensuring vendors remain free to innovate within their own implementations.

Dr Ciro Noronha, Chief Technical Officer of Cobalt Digital and president of the RIST Forum went on to talk about the most recently added profile, the RIST Advanced Profile, TR-06-03, which has just been updated to include generic authentication. The update enables RIST to be used to securely create a multicast content distribution system which is completely open source and a free alternative to proprietary DRM systems. It uses vetted and known protection methods to keep content secure without the need for external keys or devices. Only authorized receivers will be able to decrypt the multicast content.

Next, came RIST Forum members SipRadius, Alvalinks, CBS and Zixi who each talked about their role and involvement with the RIST Forum, how features of the RIST protocol can be applied, and how they use RIST in their own solutions.
