libRIST is a library that can be used to easily add the RIST protocol to your application. The session shows libRIST at three stages: building it from the repo; running it in network emulation to show it at work in a very lossy environment; and finally, extending it as a FOSS project to create a new "product."
We will clone it, get the build tools and necessary libraries from the distribution's repos, and compile it. We will stream media through the emulated lossy environment, and show two side-by-side videos, one with RIST, one without, to show its utility. Finally we'll use a camera to record a live session of a Set Top Box we're working on: Raspberry Pi, vlc and RIST. We'll take advantage of the internal timestamping to synchronize playback to within a frame or two. This demonstrates the complete transparency of FOSS projects to make them fulfill a need that would be impossible to do if the protocol and software were "black boxes".
